Heather Martin

Heather Martin grew up on the South Shore, spending her summers in Fairhaven and eventually relocating there in 2021. She received her BA in Visual/Media Arts from Emerson and a Master’s of Art Education from UMass Dartmouth in 2022. An artist for most of her life, she worked in corporate communications and several radio stations before starting her first arts-based business The Pour Artist, in 2013, while at the same time beginning her teaching career. Beginning her career as a classroom teacher in 2017, she was first required to teach ceramics which led to her intense focus on abstraction and a fascination with texture in clay, especially what can be found in nature. Heather now owns Rising Tide Pottery Studio in New Bedford, MA which opened in August of 2024.

Artist Statement

I create clay forms inspired by the organic, tiny, threatened sea creatures that have fascinated me for my entire life. These creatures bring joy and wonder to the viewer, as well as a sense of urgency. As a society we need to make crucial changes that are necessary for the survival of these precious creatures. Our oceans are in danger. Evidence of climate change, pollution, and marine traffic that is rapidly upending the
delicate balance of the oceans is becoming increasingly visible on our shores. How can we help these creatures? How are we contributing to their demise, so often without knowing it? I work with textures often in tiny detail, vivid color, repetition, and delicate pattern work. My sculptures emphasize delicacy and intimate viewing, underscoring the fragile nature of these creatures. Clay has a magical quality that similarly comes from the earth. It can beautifully manifest both the fragility and magnificence of sea life. Clay gives me an equal dose of challenge and reward, constantly astounding me with both its versatility and beauty.
