Course Description

This painting workshop is designed for advanced beginner and intermediate painters working in oils. Plein-air students should have enough experience painting in oils to feel comfortable working with the medium. They should have experience painting independently using an outdoor easel and have familiarity and a comfort level with a plein-air set up.
*Note: Acrylic and watercolor painters are welcome to attend but I cannot offer any technical instruction with these media.

We will focus primarily on how to convey a sense of light in your paintings by identifying, clarifying and establishing proper value relationships. Using exercises to help simplify these concepts, we will work to achieve clean color in our paintings, and utilize value patterns to aid in developing successful compositions. We will discuss materials, scene selection and brushwork. I will make at least one slide show presentation to illustrate the concepts we’ll be working on, and to show some of my recent work. I will paint a demonstration piece each day and work with students individually on their paintings throughout the day. Usually, students spread out and work on two paintings each day as I circulate. We’ll paint at several locations around the island, including natural landscapes as well as scenes including structural elements like buildings or boats. If we get bad weather, we will have a studio workspace available to us, and we can work from photos or still-life set ups.

Plein Air Painting, 18+

Tim Horn

Born and raised in Ohio, Horn graduated from The Cooper Union School of Art, then worked as a graphic designer for many years before discovering his love for painting. He now lives in Northern California, paints full-time and teaches painting workshops around the country and abroad. His subject matter often includes structural elements such as old buildings and vehicles, with his paintings of Airstream trailers among his most popular and most recognizable. Horn’s paintings are as much about the subjects he paints as they are about the effects of light within a particular scene. He has won numerous awards, has been featured in several magazines, including on the cover of South West Art in 2012 and is currently represented by 5 galleries around the country.
