ART CLASSES EVENTS

Course Description

We will be stressing the various ways to get you through to a finished artwork by simplifying a landscape, big sky, and other imagery. We will be working on blocking in composition, setting values, rendering and color using either oils or acrylics. The course will include quick demos, discussions and individual suggestions. Please see materials list for new information about paint brushes.

AAN is able to provide scholarships/tuition aid through the Wellness Through the Arts Program. This program is made possible through funding from the Town of Nantucket Human Services Department. For questions or assistance please contact Elizabeth Buccino, Director of Education

Cancellation Policy

AAN depends upon student tuition to continue to offer classes and workshops. Due to our commitment to small class sizes and the hands-on nature of art education, we are greatly impacted by cancellations. Nevertheless, we do understand that plans change. If you need to cancel your reservation for a class or workshop, please note our cancellation/refund policy here and let us know as soon as possible.

Materials

We all know that studio paintbrushes are notoriously unsatisfactory as it is a constant challenge to have everyone keeping them up to snuff! In the interest of establishing a more satisfying experience for all, AAN will now be asking painting students to purchase a small set of their own paintbrushes. In this way, everyone can maintain their own brushes during class and can take them home to continue their painting at home. Which brushes to buy is a matter of personal preference but if you are looking for a basic, economical set to buy, there are two sets listed below that you can purchase online from Dick Blick or Jerry’s Artarama. Create on Amelia also sells brushes.

You may also purchase the set from AAN for $45 (including tax), simply email gillian@nantucketarts.org to arrange payment to reserve a set and they will be waiting for you when you arrive for your first class.

I've been with AAN in about every capacity since 1972...janitor (at first), artist, etc. until today as artistic director. I was born in Ayer, MA. My father taught cryptography for Army Security there at Fort Devens after working with the earliest forerunners of the computer, including Turing’s *bombe* at Bletchley Park, England, during WWII. My mother was a librarian and an oil painter who studied with Emile Albert Gruppé in Gloucester as a teen and with Philip Burnham Hicken on Nantucket in her later years. The code-breaking science of deciphering gibberish into plain text somehow has meshed with a penchant for deciphering the natural world with impressionistic imagery in my own painting, a craft I basically learned from my mother, tho in the mid-1970s I studied with Philip Burnham Hicken as well.
