Discover the creative possibilities of monoprinting through the painterly printmaking techniques of drypoint and monotype. This engaging course explores how these two versatile processes can be used independently or combined to create richly layered, one-of-a-kind prints filled with texture, atmosphere, and expressive mark-making.

Students will begin by learning the fundamentals of drypoint, a relief printing technique in which images are scratched into metal or plastic plates to create delicate lines, rich tones, and intricate textures. Once inked and printed, these plates can produce a range of unique impressions through variations in wiping, inking, and color application.
The course will also introduce monotype, a spontaneous and painterly process in which ink is applied directly to a smooth plate and manipulated by hand before printing. Participants will explore a variety of monotype techniques, including additive and subtractive methods, surface rolls, stencils, chine collé, and watercolor applications.

As the class progresses, students will experiment with combining drypoint and monotype to create layered monoprints that blend line, color, texture, and transparency. These techniques offer endless opportunities for exploration, allowing artists to produce a series of unique variations from a single image.

Open to both beginners and experienced printmakers, this course encourages experimentation, creative risk-taking, and the joy of discovering unexpected results. Students will leave with a collection of original prints and a deeper understanding of contemporary printmaking processes.
