Course Description

The landscape can be daunting with a lot in front of you. How do you organize what you see into an interesting, 3-Dimensional composition? We will look at some basics of perspective and how to pick and choose what to leave in, add, or take out of your composition to make the viewer’s eye move through the space and create a dynamic design. We will explore how to work en plein air, work from photos, and how to deal with buildings, trees, waves, clouds, and figures in the space.

John Carruthers

I am the Visual Arts Dept. Chair at The Storm King School in Cornwall, NY, where I teach art to grades 9-12 including AP Studio Art and AP Art History. During the summers, I also teach at the Artists Association of Nantucket, where I won the Randy Goldberger Teaching Award in 2014, and the Mixed Media Award in 2013. I also teach a woodcut workshop at The Art Students League of New York. I have taught art in public and private schools in New York, and art history as adjunct faculty at Mercy College where I also earned a Masters Degree in Education. With a Master’s degree from the New York Academy of Art, five years of printmaking study at Pratt Graphic Center and Hunter College, I have been creating and selling woodcuts for 30 years. My work is represented by The Gallery on India Street, Nantucket, MA, and at the Artists Association of Nantucket gallery. In 2003, I started to establish my teaching career, and exhibited in galleries close to where I teach.
