Course Description

Have you ever wanted to sculpt an animal—whether it’s a beloved pet, a creature from the wild, or something entirely from your imagination? In this three-day intensive workshop, instructor Rika Petrova Powers will guide students through the complete process of creating a single animal sculpture from start to finish.

Using handbuilding techniques, participants will learn how to construct a hollow three-dimensional form using slabs, while exploring methods of shaping, manipulating, adding, and subtracting clay to bring their chosen subject to life. Rika will demonstrate approaches to building strong structures, capturing gesture and personality, and creating realistic surface textures such as fur, feathers, scales, and skin. Students will also have the opportunity to explore stylization and expressive interpretation.

Participants should come prepared with a specific animal in mind and are encouraged to bring photographs and/or drawings as visual references. Throughout the workshop, demonstrations and individual instruction will help each student focus on completing one finished sculpture.

To add the finishing touches, students will use underglazes to bring color and character to their sculptures. Finished pieces will then be clear coated with a satin glaze by the studio, enhancing surface details while providing a soft, durable finish.

Suitable for both beginners and experienced clay artists, this immersive workshop offers a unique opportunity to deepen your sculptural skills while creating a meaningful and personal work of art.

Ceramic Animal Sculpture Workshop, 18+

Rika Petrova-Powers

I was born in Bulgaria and visited Nantucket in the summer of 2005, fell in love and made it my home. I started taking classes at the AAN and discovered the joy of working with clay. Today I specialize in hand- building, primarily focusing on slab building techniques. By drawing inspiration and embracing nature's beauty of marine life, I experiment with animal forms to create unique ceramic pieces that often gravitate towards the darker aspects of spirits- merging the organic with the ethereal world and the mysteries that lie beneath the surface. My engineering background helps me push the boundaries of the medium, building hollow, structurally sound sculptures without wire support. I became Artist Association member in 2023 and received the AAN Liz Shaeffler Sculpture/ 3D Award that same year. My work can be found at the Sustainable Nantucket Artisan's Market, Sylvia Antiques and all AAN Galleries.
