Course Description

In this course we will explore how to capture our urban surroundings - be that Nantucket cottages, its boat basin or the soaring skylines of New York - though a process of gestural, loose painting and abstraction that captures the vibrancy of our environment without getting bogged down by detail.

Designed for artists of all levels, this immersive course guides you in transforming the geometry, texture, and rhythm of urban environments into bold, expressive works of art. Through exercises and instruction, you’ll learn how to distill buildings, streets, and skylines into compelling compositions that balance colourful abstraction with architectural essence. Whether you’re inspired by weathered shingle and picket fences, cool shadows on concrete, or the chaos of city life, this course will empower you to reimagine urban scenes with creativity and confidence.

Cancellation Policy

AAN depends upon student tuition to continue to offer classes and workshops. Due to our commitment to small class sizes and the hands-on nature of art education, we are greatly impacted by cancellations. Nevertheless, we do understand that plans change. If you need to cancel your reservation for a class or workshop, please note our cancellation/refund policy here and let us know as soon as possible.

Materials

Some level of previous painting experience should be expected, so participants will have a knowledge of oil and acrylic and a preference for one. We will begin with artists working in their preferred medium with the possibility of experimenting with new mediums if it will be advantageous to the artists development. Please bring/provide oil painting and acrylic materials as well as Masonite boards and canvas.

Participants should bring reference photos to work from. But some will also be supplied along with examples of other artists we’ll be referencing and studying.
