Susan Lenane

Susan Lenane

Living year-round on Nantucket and working as a mathematics teacher on the island for the last decade, Susan enrolled in pottery classes at the Artist Association and was immediately hooked! Now, five years later, she is incredibly grateful and inspired by the community of teachers and learners at the Artist Association.

Artist Statement

“I spent years immersed in the structured world of mathematics—teaching formulas, solving problems, finding comfort in precision. But when I found pottery a few years ago, something shifted. Clay offered a different kind of logic: one that responds to touch, to time, to instinct. It gave me space to let go of control and rediscover joy through making.

Pottery fills me with a deep, quiet happiness. I’m drawn to the feel of the clay, the hum of the wheel, the meditative rhythm of forming something from nothing. There’s a freedom in the process—a playful, physical dialogue between my hands and the earth. Each piece is a reflection of presence, curiosity, and the simple delight of creation.

In clay, I’ve found not just a medium, but a way of being—one that embraces imperfection, invites exploration, and celebrates the beauty of the handmade. Making pottery is my way of expressing joy, and sharing that joy is what keeps me coming back to the wheel, again and again.”
