I am mostly self taught but had the good fortune to study at the Art Students League and The Southern Atelier. I believe my study of traditional academic disciplines gave me a solid foundation that allows me to explore and interpret the world around me in my own voice.
I am a member of the Artists Association of Nantucket and I am an active member for the second time on their board of directors. I am represented by the AAN at the Johnson Gallery, Nantucket, The Nantucket Looms, Candita Clayton Gallery, Rhode Island and I have maintained a studio/gallery at Towles Court Studios in Sarasota, Florida for 12 years.
In my work I explore the connection and relationship between objects and the emotions they trigger. The space between an object is as important the object and sometimes the simple minimal depiction tells the story. My design background in fashion and landscape set me on a path that shapes my work today. Texture, mass and color are all important elements. How light moves over objects and fog envelops a scene are important narratives that are my interpretation or fantasy of the subject. The images reside within the two-dimensional frame and are based on my associations and memories from my childhood on and around the coast in both England where I was born and coastal New England and Nantucket where I have lived most of my life. There is often a stillness and aloneness in my work that allows the viewer time to still their mind and enter the scene to develop their own narrative.
