Kathleen Kasmar Van Lieu

I retired to Omaha, NE after living on Nantucket for 40 years. Qualifying as a life member of the Nantucket Artists Association was an important milestone and gaining more experience than I could originally imagine. I brought that with me to Omaha. I still love and miss the Island. However, in Omaha I have become part of a growing contemporary and independent art scene. My journey from the East Coast to the Midwest has mirrored my transition to abstraction from a more realistic style with plenty of changes along the way.

Artist Statement

Abstractionistic painting gives me the ability to transform my sensory and emotional experience into visual expression. My subject matter ranges through Conceptual, Floral, Humanistic and Scenic Terrains. These hold the planet’s most relevant history, and I strive to answer my questions about how we are affected. What is happening beneath the surface? How can I show experience before knowing? Who or what existed before? Using color, line, layers, and multimedia as exploration in each painting, I strive to discover a sense about meaning, universal and personal. Although I begin with a semi-planned approach, each painting eventually becomes both more spontaneous and more labor intensive than expected until achieving its ineffable yet satisfactory completion.
