G.S. Hill

Artist Life Member

Gregory Spencer Hill, a.k.a. G.S. Hill, born 1944 and raised in Southern California, he demonstrated his artistic talent with his first oil painting at age 12. Inspired by his mother’s artistic talent and his natural talent he has achieved his “claim to fame” as an accomplished artist in many mediums and unlimited subject matter.
Greg and Judi were married in 1968 and a three month, 13 country honeymoon in Europe convinced him it was time to open his own gallery in Seal Beach, California. There, he began painting marine and landscapes, teaching children basic art lessons, but yearning to travel and embarked on a two year camping tour of the perimeter of North and South America, painting along the way.
Maui beckoned in 1974, resulting in a turning point in his career when he caught the attention of Nantucket gallery owners Dot and Ed Hyde. He arrived on island in 1979 to take over their gallery and renamed it the G.S. Hill Gallery, and proceeded to open Straight Wharf Gallery and Gifts in 1981, and Hill’s of Nantucket in 1983 and Nantucket Pearl Company in 2008. Today, all three galleries are combined into one and continue to exhibit his original oil, watercolor, and pencil work along with custom-designed American-made gifts and pearl jewelry.
Greg paints the palette of the world in watercolor and continues to use graphite for honing his attention for detail. Nantucket remains his treasure trove of never-ending subject matter, light source, and inspiration.
