Barbara Kauffmann-Locke

1925-2012

Barbara grew up in Canada and studied pre-med at McMaster University in Ontario. After graduating from the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and having artwork on display for ten years, she found Nantucket.  Her paintings are in collections nationally and internationally.

She expanded her studies at the Evanston Arts Center, the North Shore Art League, and the Vermont Studio Center. She worked out of her own studio-gallery at One New Street, Siasconset until 2009— Barbara’s 28th year as a Nantucket artist.

In 2000, Barbara won the first of the AAN’s C. Robert Perrin watercolor awards.

As one art critic wrote, “One of Nantucket’s favorite watercolorists is known for her sparkling images of the island, abundant with flowers, boats, or enchanting rose-covered cottages. Barbara Kauffmann-Locke’s whimsical inclusion of a knowing, observant sea gull or the casually placed bicycle and other pen and ink details capture the essence of the island. Her work reflects her own deep love of the island.”
