Thompson studied at Cornell, and later taught at RISD and Parsons School of Design. He was the proprietor of Nantucket Printmaking from 1975–78, and co-founded the Nantucket Island School of Design and the Arts in 1979, instructing summers there until 1991. In addition to his formal education in painting, he has a degree in cognitive psychology.
