Anthony H. Thompson
(1938-2024)
Tony Thompson studied at Cornell and later taught at RISD and Parsons School of Design. His work was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC, the Institute for Contemporary Art in Boston, and many other venues in the USA and Europe.
Thompson worked on Nantucket starting in the 1950’s, and he received grants to carry on his art career from both the Massachusetts and New York state arts councils. He was the proprietor of Nantucket Printmaking from 1975–78. Three of his etchings are preserved in the AAN Permanent Collection. Tony was a Co-founding Educator for the Nantucket Island School of Design and the Arts in 1979, instructing summers there until 1991. He exhibited on Nantucket at the Main Street Gallery, AAN, and more recently at Gráficas.
Tony and his wife and fellow artist, Margaret, moved to Hudson, New York in 1989, where he painted Columbia County landscapes as well as making abstract works in many media. He passed away on January 7th, 2024, at the age of 85.
