AAN ISLAND TEACHERS 

ELIZABETH BUCCINO graduated from Maryland Institute, College of Art in 1999 with a BFA in Sculptural Studies and Art Education. While in Baltimore, she volunteered with The Police Athletic League in their After School Outreach Program, interned with Baltimore Museum of Art’s education department, and worked as a studio assistant for a local sculptor. While pursuing her studio practice, she continued working with children in community outreach projects. After moving to Nantucket, Elizabeth became an AAN artists member in 2002, and later in 2014 began teaching children and developing the after school ceramics programming working closely with Lori Garrabrant, as well as the mixed media and ceramics programming for the Nantucket New School’s “Studio to School.” program. ELIZABETH CONGDON is a painterly realist who earned her BA in Art at the University of California at Santa Cruz, and studied classical realism in Florence at Studio Cecil-Graves. She is a longtime AAN artist member, known for her floral still lifes and landscapes oil paintings. In Rhode Island, Congdon co-founded the Jamestown Arts Center and produced a documentary film on a site-specific Nutcracker  Ballet in  Newport , RI’s PRosecliff Mansion.   Newport Recently, Congdon continued the graduate studies she began at Parsons School of Design’s MFA Painting Program, graduating from Laguna College of Art and Design’s MFA Painting Program with honors and was awarded the teaching fellowship.  Congdon is represented by Robert Foster Fine Art Gallery, and currently serves as AAN’s Director of Adult Programming. elizabethcongdonart.com

LEYAH JENSEN MARSHALL  holds a BFA Honors degree from the Rhode Island School of Design. Studies in fine art have taken her worldwide, from acclaimed institutions like the Danish Design School and Pacific Northwest College of Art to Artist Residencies in India, Haiti, and Nepal. She is the recipient of distinguished awards ranging from a National Gold Medal in Art & Design (VICA) to New York Book Show 1st place winners and #1 bestselling pop-ups (New York Times). Locally she is a recipient of the Chase Plein-Air Award, and enjoys sharing her broad fluency in art mediums through teaching while working as a fine artist and children’s book creator in Nantucket.

JENNA DARKOW  earned her Occupational Therapy degree with a minor at Ithaca College in 2013. Returning home to Tiverton, RI, Jenna began studying weekly at Tiverton’s Bow House Studio Pastel group, and fell in love with pastels for their forgiving, blendable, immediate nature that allows her to create vibrant layered images. In 2016, Jenna moved to Nantucket, and soon after became an AAN artists member and began showing her work in local galleries. www.jennadarkow.com

TRACY DAILY discovered the therapeutic, calming power of working with clay in her college’s ceramics studio. Fascinated by how the textures and surfaces of clay can be enhanced by the rich variety of colored glazes through firing, Tracy has developed a deep appreciation for how ceramics activates the tactile sense in visual art, as the viewer shares in the artistic process. NICCI AGUIAR is an illustrator from Nantucket whose passion for cartoons, animation, and comic books led her to study Sequential Art at Savannah College of Art and Design. After graduating from SCAD in 2016 Nicci moved back home where she continued to create her fun and silly illustrations. MAURA WENDELKEN recieved her BFA in Photography at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston in 2014. Her love of photography led her to explore both analog and digital practices. She is interested in historical, alternative, and contemporary photography techniques. Maura currently teaches art at Cyrus Peirce Middle School and at the AAN. BARBARA CAPIZZO has been drawing and painting as long as she can remember. Her passion led her to pursue a degree from the Women’s College of Georgia with a double major in Psychology and Art Education. From there, Barbara went on to attend Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Florida, where she studied Interior Design, and eventually received her Masters in Education degree from the American International College in Massachusetts. Barbara’s roots with the AAN run deep as she has been an artist member since the 60’s, served on the board, and even as president. She still refers to art as her anchor as well as escape, and spends the winters back in Florida brushing up on her own art with a variety of workshops with talented instructors. https://www.bcapizzo-art.com

ERIKA CHRISTENSEN SCULLY is a portrait and landscape artist who lives and works in New York City and Nantucket. She earned her BA in studio art from William Smith College and Diploma in Portraiture from Heatherley’s School of Fine Art in London. The sprawling and diverse mosaic of eclectic energy of city life, and her travels throughout Europe strongly influence her creativity, as well as the emotions and personalities that lie within the human form. MOLLIE NELSON WEBSTER is a printmaker and photographer who lives and works in Providence, RI, and Nantucket. Webster earned her BA in Art History at Wesleyan University, and her MFA in Visual Arts at Vermont College of Fine Arts. As a passionate environmentalist, her collograph prints incorporate found objects from nature and waste from domestic life. Webster recently joined the AAN as an artist member and teacher. JOHN CARRUTHERS received his BFA from Fordham University, and went on to earn his MFA Magna Cum Laude from New York Academy of Art’s Graduate School of Figurative Study, and his second MFA in Childhood Education/Students with Disabilities from Mercy College. He is a longtime AAN artist member and teacher for adults and children. Carruthers teaches at the Storm King School in NY, teaching art’s personal expressive properties as the connective tissue to learn real world innovation and career skills. He developed his energetic woodcut style after 5 years studying printmaking at Hunter College and Pratt Graphic Center, and is represented on island by The Knight Gallery and Nantucket Looms, and in New York City by Gray Owl Gallery. https://johncarruthers.org/home.html

KATIE TRINKLE LEGGE graduated with an honors BFA from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia in 1988. Legge is a lifelong member of the AAN, and served as President in the mid 2000’s. After living on Nantucket for years, she moved to New Zealand with her husband and child, but returns every summer to exhibit her work at Nantucket’s Old Spouter Gallery and Wellfleet’s Left Bank Gallery. Legge’s vivid canvases of fruit and animals are painted with water mixable oils a unique combination of contemporary and classical painting styles. Her lush palette and oversized subjects evoke a dynamic sense of space and depth on each canvas, bringing common objects to a new plane. MICHAEL RICH is the Chair of Visual Arts at Roger Williams University in Bristol, RI, who earned his Illustration BFA at Rhode Island School of Art and Design and Painting MFA at Savannah College of Art and Design. Rich’s abstractions search out intimate moments of reflection to find a deeper connection to place and a consciousness of the present moment. He is an AAN lifetime artist member and teacher who shows nationally. His museum exhibitions include The Bristol Art Museum, The Newport Art Museum and the Walton Arts Center, Fayetteville Arkansas.  Rich is the recipient of the Basil H. ELIZABETH KING DURAND is a graduate of St Mary’s College of Notre Dame, and a lifetime AAN artist member and teacher. She lives in Rochester, NY, where she has taught printmaking for many years at the Rochester Institute of Technology and the Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester, and is presently teaching at St. John Fisher College.  She draws her inspiration for her work from the remote west of Ireland, the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York, and Nantucket. Her original etchings and monoprints are held in numerous private and corporate collections.  She has created three Presentation Prints for the Memorial Art Gallery as well as commissioned editions for Cornell University and many corporations. 

SHERRE WILSON LILJEGREN is a painter, photographer, mixed media artist, and lifelong AAN member. She received her BFA at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia in Painting and Printmaking, before earning an MS in Art Education at Massachusetts College of Art. Wilson-Liljergen has shown her work internationally, exhibiting her ethereal landscapes and interiors of Nantucket, England, Spain, Mexico, Wyoming and the Artic. In the late 90’s she revamped the adult painting classes at the Gardner-Perry facility, later serving on the AAN board from 2009 to 2018. MARIO A. ROBINSON STORY RESIDENCY – is a watercolorist, pastel artist and oil painter who is a member of the National Arts Club, Salmagundi Club, and Pastel Society of America. His work has been featured in many prestigious art magazines, including the cover of American Artist magazine. While earning his BFA at Pratt Institute, Mario studied classical techniques, becoming an avid student of realism. However, his own sensibility of realism is distinctly defined by American painters like Wyeth, Homer, and Eakins. With a timeless, universal aesthetic Mario depicts simple day to day moments of solitude and reflection. Among his numerous awards and accolades, Mario was chosen to paint a portrait of one of the Charleston Church Shooting victims. SHANE MCCLATCHEY SEA RESIDENCY – is an emerging artist working, exhibiting, and teaching in Southern California. Inspired by surfing, diving, and lifeguarding, Shane’s paintings search out a balance between curiosity and vulnerability, internal and external realities, ocean and land. These fleeting boundaries echo in his studio practice, as he negotiates form and shape in positive and negative space. Shane received both his BFA and MFA in Painting at Laguna College of Art and Design, where he was mentored by contemporary figurative master painters such as F. Scott Hess and John Brosio. STUART SHILS is a contemporary American landscape painter who has exhibited and taught internationally. His works toe the line between formal abstraction and fidelity to the scene he is observing. Mainly known as a plein-air painter, he has recently incorporated working from his own photographs of urban scenes. Shils studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts under Seymour Remenick and Arthur De Costa. He was the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, and an Academy Award in Art from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York. BERND HAUSSMANN is a German-born abstract artist, now living as a US resident in the north shore of Boston and western Maine. Haussmann’s work is internationally exhibited, and hangs in numerous private, corporate, and museum collections around the world. He has also taught at several American universities and colleges, and teaches mindfulness workshops in Iceland, Germany, and the US. From 2012 to 2015, Haussmann engaged with scientists in a non-verbal dialogue, “Dialogues” as artist-in-residence at the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT. CHRISTIE SCHEELE received her BFA at Alfred University, during which time she was awarded a fellowship at the Royal Academy of Fine Art at San Fernando and studied at the University Complutense of Madrid. Her mediative atmospheric landscapes are a confluence of all the places where she has lived and travelled, and currently most inspired by the Northeastern coastlines, rivers, and mountains. Scheele exhibits nationally, and has been included by such notable collections as the Queens Museum of Art, the Dorsky Museum, The Tyler Museum of Art, American Airlines, and Waterford Crystal. ALYSON DE GUIGNÉ studied Film at the University of Southern California and worked in the film industry before turning her artistic eye to painting. Her Carmel-By-The-Sea based greeting card company called Freedom Art is inspired by the Monterey Peninsula’s natural beauty, and her cards can be found at Whole Foods in California, and here in Nantucket at Parchment on Washington Street. She draws her inspiration for all her work from the serenity of the Pacific Ocean, stormy skies, and bright hues of aquatic life. DINA GARDNER is an award winning pastel artist who became fascinated by pastels in her mid-fifties , educating herself through classes, workshops, and books, and diligently painting every day. As an artist living bicoastal, Gardner’s work is inspired by the seascapes and landscapes of California and Massachusetts. She is an Associate Member of the Pastel Society of America and a member of the Wellesley Society of Artists. She is also a founder and Signature Status Member of the Central Mass Pastel Society and a member of Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod. ARTIST IN RESIDENCY COMING IN 2021 

ZOEY FRANK is a Colorado based artist who studied art at Seattle’s classical atelier Gage Academy of Art, before being accepted by Laguna College of Art and Design’s Painting MFA Program in California. At LCAD Zoey met Bo Bartlett who inspired the evolution of her style from an academic, traditional approach to a dynamic exploration of color, space, and narrative. After graduation she won the Elizabeth Greenshields Grant four times, and was a four time finalist in the Art Renewal Center Salon show before being awarded their TIAC award. DAVID DUNLOP is a modern-day old master whose luminous landscapes draw from both Renaissance techniques and contemporary science. After receiving his MFA at Pratt Institute of Art, David built his reputation as a painter who combines artistic skill, knowledge and enthusiasm. The Emmy winning PBS television series Landscapes Through Time with David Dunlop also earned him an invitation to lecture at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, as well as speaking, teaching, and exhibiting in many other museums and art institutions across the country and around the world. DAN GRAZIANO is an award winning, nationally exhibited artist who is a member of Oil Painters of America, California Art Club, Laguna Plein Air Painters Association-Signature Member, and American Impressionist Society. Inspired by painters like Hopper, Thiebaud, Diebenkorn, and the Wyeths, Dan paints with a deep appreciation for the time worn buildings, rugged coastlines, small rural towns, and forgotten roadside relics. His plein-air artists eye sifts through the landscape’s rich complexity to discover the unique fragments of geometry that are magically transformed by light. DONALD DEMERS’ love of art was inspired by his summers sailing off the coast of Maine, and later crewing aboard traditional schooners and quareriggers. After studying at the School of the Worcester Art Museum and the Massachusetts College of Art, he began his professional career as an illustrator. Now, as an award winning marine and landscape painter, Demer’s paintings have been included in a wide range of  art and maritime publications. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Marine Artists, an elected member of the Guild of Boston Artists and the California Art Club, and a signature member of Plein Air Painters of America. RUTH GILMORE LANGS is an Ann Arbor, MI, native who exhibits her abstract expressionist paintings nationally. Although she minored in painting at American University in Washington DC, she cites her true artistic development to studying with Chinese artist Kwok Wai Lau. Painting is an intensely personal endeavor for Ruth, which she uses to process her life experiences, explore the beauty of nature, and passionately connect to the world around her. In Ruth’s workshops, she teaches painting as the language of the human spirit–the rhythm, beat and song of the self. DIANE HARRISON received her BFA in Textile Design from The Program in Artisanry at Boston University. After over a decade of working as a buyer and product designer in the high-end home furnishings industry in New York City, Harrison moved to Rhode Island where she concentrated her work on photography textile design. LENNY MOSKOWITZ received his BFA from the Philadelphia College of Art and his MFA from Cranbrook Academy. He is a painterly figurative and abstract artist who embraces the creative spirit of the unexpected and unknown in order to develop a different vision of reality to emerge with order and smoothed edges. Lenny has exhibited his paintings and has been awarded several residencies nationwide.
