Artist in Residence Program

Artists Association of Nantucket celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2015!  This milestone also marks the beginning of a new era for the AAN.  We have recently expanded and can now offer an Artist In Residence Program.  The mission of AAN is to foster the visual arts on Nantucket. We do this by promoting, supporting and encouraging the work of Nantucket artists, providing educational programs in the arts, and preserving the legacy of Nantucket artists.  The Artist in Residence opportunity is one more way we are fulfilling our mission.

Residencies are awarded annually between November – June.  Fees depend on the dates chosen.  As part of the residency program, you will have the opportunity to work with AAN members and the Nantucket community.

As part of your time with us, we ask that you consider sharing your experience in the form of an exhibition in our Visual Arts Center gallery, an artist talk, open to the public or a teaching workshop.  Some options may reduce your residency fee.

There are two, three and four week residencies available.  All dates are on the application. Please give a few options and number the preference.

Living at the Visual Arts Cetner

The Visual Arts Center is located in the Center of Nantucket Island, convenient to all services.  Bike paths are everywhere, however in the late fall and winter a car may be necessary, as the public shuttle buses do not run after Columbus Day.

The residency includes a furnished studio apartment, with a full-size bed and full kitchen and bath.

Private Studio

A generous sized private studio is provided, equipped with a table, easel, painting cart with palette, sink and cleaning supplies.  A printmaking studio is also available for shared use.

Qualifications

The applicant must be a practicing 2D artist or a ceramic artist.  (Ceramic applicants will have to complete a separate application, please inquire by email.)  A letter of intent is suggested to accompany the application that demonstrates how the experience will be of benefit to you.

For those who wish to teach, previous teaching experience is required.  Please give an outline or proposal of a sample of a workshop in painting, printmaking, book arts or drawing.  The workshop can be a six to nine hour workshop given over several days.  Details will be discussed upon acceptance to the residency.

We practice greener safety practices at the Visual Arts Center.  Please read the studio rules to see if it complies with your studio practice. VAC Studio Standards
