Course Description

Discover the creative power of capturing your inspirations in a sketchbook. Artist Heather V McLeod shares the portable watercolor and ballpoint pen techniques that she uses to record her visual observations wherever she goes. For the first class, she will cover line weight, shading, and composition, as well as introducing the class to a range of contemporary artists who use the art of the sketchbook in intriguing ways. Class then will meet outside in dry weather to find inspiration; class will meet in the studio in the case of rain, to sketch Nantucket’s natural treasures from the beach and garden. Whether you are interested in personal art journaling, creatively documenting travels, and/or looking for a quick, efficient way to take notes for future image making in the studio, you will learn indispensable ways to work with watercolor and the ever-versatile ballpoint pen, far exceeding any insights you can make on your iphone. If you’ve been wanting to start a sketchbook and have never gotten around to it, take this as your sign to start. Beginners welcome.

Materials

All Materials are included, but you are welcome to bring your own favorite sketch books and sketching supplies.

The Art of Sketching with Pen and Watercolor

Heather V McLeod

Heather V McLeod is an artist exploring identity and the psychology by which we perceive others. Interested primarily in portraiture and representative work, Heather creates pieces with the intent of capturing the character of the figure portrayed. She plays with the use of symbolism and concealment to enhance the narrative and evoke a quiet yet humorous side to portraiture. Born and raised in the greater New York area, Heather received her MFA from The New York Academy of Art in 2021 and her BFA from Rhode Island School of Design in 2016. In 2017 she was awarded a Fulbright Study/Research Award in Perugia, Italy where she lived and worked for a year. She is a recent recipient of two Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grants and The Leslie T. and Francis Posey Scholarship. She has been featured in a number of exhibitions in the U.S. and abroad and has been the recipient of a number of art related awards, including most recently AXA Art Prize Finalist.
