Course Description

Experience the peacefully real and mysteriously glorious pursuit of painting floral still lifes. Through slide-presentation and studio demonstrations, artist Heather McLeod will discuss how flowers have been depicted throughout history, their special language of symbolism, and how you can develop the visual story that you would like to tell. You will learn classic oil painting techniques for capturing a variety of textures, from soft billowy petals to strong structured stems and leaves, and how to effectively juxtapose the other elements of the painting, like the vase, surface, and background to create mood and atmosphere. Focus will also be placed on the narrative power of color, light, and composition. No matter what your personal style is, you will learn valuable skills not only for painting a cohesive painting, but a compelling one as well. Some knowledge of oil paint and drawing necessary.
