Artist in Residence Program

In 2015 AAN launched an Artist In Residence Program. Residencies are awarded annually between November and June.  Fees depend on the dates chosen.  As part of the residency program, you will have the opportunity to work with AAN members and the Nantucket community. As part of your time with us, we ask that residence consider sharing their experience in the form of an exhibition in our VAC gallery, an artist talk open to the public, or a teaching workshop.  Some options may reduce your residency fee.

Living at the Visual Arts Center

The residency includes a furnished studio apartment, with a full-size bed. The VAC is located in the center of the island and is convenient to all services.  Bike paths are everywhere, however in the late fall and winter a car may be necessary, as the public shuttle buses do not run after Columbus Day.

Private Studio

A generous-sized private studio is provided and equipped with a table, easel, painting cart with palette, sink and cleaning supplies.  A printmaking studio is also available for shared use.

Qualifications

The applicant must be a practicing two-deminsional artist or a ceramic artist.  Ceramic applicants see ceramic application.  A letter of intent is suggested to accompany the application that demonstrates how the experience will be of benefit to you.

For those who wish to teach, previous teaching experience is required.  Please give an outline or proposal of a sample of a workshop in painting, printmaking, book arts, or drawing.  The workshop may be six to nine hours given over several days.  Details will be discussed upon acceptance to the residency.

We practice greener safety practices at the VAC.  Please read the studio rules to see if it complies with your studio practice.

Application should include:

  • $10 application fee. Checks made to AAN
  • Three references
  • Portfolio on a CD or thumb drive with up to, but not to exceed, 20 digital images of your work. Provide a corresponding list with your images that include your name and title, size, medium, and date of each work.  CD and thumb drives will not be returned.  Images must be as a JPEG file that can be read on a MAC operating system.
  • Current resume/CV
