Sidewalk Art Show #1 - May 26, 10am - 3pm
Sidewalk Art Show #2 - August 25, 10am - 3pm
In 2012 the AAN will host two Sidewalk Art Shows in the garden of the Nantucket Atheneum in the heart of downtown.
The Sidewalk Art Show is a fun, all-day outdoor fine art show and a wonderful opportunity to meet some of Nantucket's finest artists.
Originally founded in 1930 by artist Maud Stumm, the show has a long and colorful past. Historically, the Sidewalk Art Show was held in August over the period of a few days, open to professionals and amateurs alike. The Artists Association took the reins of the event in 1960s featuring work by the likes of Robert Perrin, Colonel Julian Yates and countless others. Of Yates, George Thomas recalls, "People lined up waiting for him to arrive with his canvases which were usually wet. They were snatched up immediately..." In following years, some of which were sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, the Sidewalk Art Show venues came to include locations such as Straight Wharf, the old town building, the Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery, and the Atheneum.
In case of bad weather on the morning of the event, there will be a rain date on the the Sunday of the same weekend for each Sidewalk Art Show.
