Artists of the AAN
The AAN boasts over 240 Nantucket artists that work in a wide variety of media including sculpture, painting, photography, printmaking, jewelry, and ceramics. Membership entitles them to participate in a minimum of twelve gallery exhibitions, as well as several annual events like our Spring Sweep in April, the Sidewalk Art Shows in May, July and August, and the Wet Paint Auction in October.
When the island's only gallery--the venerable Easy Street Gallery--closed in 1943, island artists and concerned patrons banded together and launched the AAN by the fall of 1945. They forged a strong relationship with the three-month-old Kenneth Taylor Galleries on Straight Wharf that lasted a half century. That same determination continues today, making the AAN Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery a unique proving ground for up-and-coming artists and seasoned professionals alike. Most of the AAN workshop classes are taught by skilled members and several artists serve as mentors to high school students. Their active participation in the community helps cement the AAN's role as a bedrock of stability in the continuing art colony of Nantucket.
Our review dates for artist membership — open to resident and summer resident applicants — are held four times a year. Applications are available at the AAN administrative offices at 1 Gardner Perry Lane or click here to download a PDF. For more information, please call 508 228 0722.
