Hicken, Philip Burnham

(1910-1985)

Lynn, MA / Nantucket, Mass.

Painter, educator, screenprinter. Boston Printmakers; Cambridge Art Association; fellow Royal Society of Art; Art Association of Nantucket. His work can be found in the Brooklyn Museum; Berkshire Museum; Princeton Pr. C. With colleagues he helped invent the modern silk screen technique. He was commissioned for a WPA mural, in Fort Warren, Mass, 1941. He had a combat art assignment (see the US Department Military History, 1970).

He was painting instructor at Harvard University Grad School Design, 1950-1953; at Boston University, 1956-1957; and starting in 1957 was Chairman of the Fine Arts Department at the Art Institute of Boston.

He exhibited at: Pittsfield Art League; Black Mountain, NC Art Club; Kansas City USO; New England Solider Association; Wichita, Kansas; ACA Gallery; Boston Arts Festival; National Academy, Rome Italy; Copley Galleries; Eric Galleries; etc

He taught painting to a number of students on island,many of whom became accomplished island painters, including Francis Arkin, Brock Davis, Barbara Frazier, Robert Frazier, etc. Also some artists from an earlier era, like Isabelle Tuttle, Millicent Clapp, and Dorothy Goerger. Each summer he moved between Lynn and Nantucket until in the early ‘80’s he moved here permanently to his home and studio at 23 Pine Street.
