Gardner, Mary Patricia 'Pat'

(1926-2001)

Pat Gardner was raised on Mount Vernon Farm along Hummock Pond Road, and she was instrumental in placing family land in conservation. An avid birding enthusiast, Pat was a member o f the island’s marine mammal stranding team and served on the boards of many arts and cultural organizations, including several stints for the AAN which she joined in 1947.

She took drawing lessons from Ruth Haviland Sutton. Following the path of her grandfather, Wallace Gardner (a trained sculptor), Pat studied with Earl S. Ray in the ‘60’s to learn how to use tools and how to carve. She created her own version of Nantucket shorebirds; also working in watercolors and printmaking.
