Congdon, Anne Ramsdell

(1873–1958)

In her youth Congdon studied with Charles H. Woodbury and Rhoda Nichols, an assistant to William Merritt Chase., but gave up artistic pursuits to raise two children and run an antiques business in New Hampshire.

Congdon discovered Frank Swift Chase on a family visit to the island, and after she moved permanently to 5 Orange Street in 1930, she studied with Chase and worked out of one of Florence Lang’s studios on Commercial Wharf.

One of the many successful students of Frank Chase, she was a regular exhibitor at the Easy Street Gallery and the AAN.

Congdon was an ardent supporter of the Sidewalk Art Show, and she was a volunteer who often sat the Kenneth Taylor Galleries on Sundays starting in its first week of operation.
